PHILOSOPHY
By nurturing a close working relationship with each Client, the practice develops a thorough understanding of the project brief, and works towards a design solution that is both creative, pragmatic and appropriate to the clients needs. We strongly believe that effective communication between clients, contractors and consultants is a vital factor in providing a quality service.

We are a small practice by choice, believing that our compact size creates a strong team work ethic, which promotes creativity in design and a thorough approach to project management. We also continually strive to achieve best practice across our business from the service that we provide to our clients, to the working environment created within the office. We value all of our jobs equally, and every project benefits from the hands-on involvement of a Director or an Associate.

SERVICE
McCaren Design offers the full range of professional architectural services from inception to completion. We provide a ‘hands-on’ service to guide the client through the process from design, to Planning approval, project management and construction. The company Director takes pride in having a personal input at all stages of the design process for every project.
We also work on a partial services basis such as a Planning services and Building Regulations approval. In all cases, the service provided is personalised to meet the individual needs of each Client.

RECENT PROJECTS
Recent projects include a Therapy Building for the Haye Mill Charity Trust in Cornwall, an extension to a Residential Care Home for young people with learning disabilities; a commercial flats development of 19 units, in Plymouth; and a number of private residences located in the South West. These range from timber-framed holiday chalets to new build houses having an estimated build cost of around £1.5 million. Our open and adaptable design approach creates bespoke architecture tailored to our clients’ requirements, and sensitive to the character of existing buildings and the site.

PAST EXPERIENCE
Prior to establishing McCaren Design, Robin McCaren held senior positions in a number of private practices in Plymouth. He has also worked in Hastings, Portsmouth, Southampton, London and Belfast. He has worked on such projects as Project Architect for 134 flats in Hastings, (value £3.5 m in 1984), and a Naval Weapons Testing facility in Exeter, (value 3.5 m in 1987.) We operate alongside our two sister companies – Access and Design and Box interior design.
Access and Design provides advice on Disability Access issues. Box offers interior design services. The resulting partnership of Architecture, Access, and Interior design expertise under the same roof is a unique combination which enables us to take a holistic view of an entire design to ensure that all potential users' needs are met in full.
